Influencers play an important role in motivating people to try new ways of working. Individually or as a “change champion network,” they guide our beliefs and actions. The American Library Association has been using the influencer stratagem for decades, encouraging people to read more. I brought Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot” with me as I backpacked through Europe at 27 solely because David Bowie held it in his READ poster. He influenced my choice because I wanted to be like him, and I read it cover to cover, just like he did.

I’ve seen a lot of gimmicks to get people to learn new tricks (I’m looking at you, “gamification”), but I maintain that nothing’s as good as just getting stuck in and messing about with the pieces to build something new, different or better. Seems my husband’s best friends at Lego agree (unsurprisingly…).
